Fall Lawn Care Begins with Aerification

A return to cooler weather offers hope for our languishing, tall fescue lawns. Some lawn care professionals have been holding off on their overseeding jobs until the Triad gets some significant rainfall.  Experts recommend that fescue lawns be seeded by late October to ensure that their roots have enough time to establish before winter weather. A beautiful lawn next spring begins this fall.

You can begin the process by scalping the lawn with a mower set at the lowest blade setting. Remove the grass clippings, weeds, and thatch using some elbow grease or a power rake.  Clay soils are often compacted due to foot traffic and mowing equipment. When renovating an existing lawn, you should consider aerification (“plugging/ coring”) before overseeding.  The benefits of aerification include- improved water penetration into the soil, increased oxygen levels for the roots, and better root development. The best aerating equipment removes cores of soil--- increasing germination of seed while improving soil structure. Well-aerated soils help the grass roots grow deeper and better able to survive a drought.
Some people prefer to hire a professional to assist with aerification since it can be physically challenging. Do-it-yourselfers should contact a rental company for the availability of equipment in your community. (Saturday rentals are a first-come-first-serve frenzy.)
When the aerification step is complete, it is easy to remove excess thatch by raking. garden rakeYou will now have a good environment in which to broadcast seeds. Many of the seeds fall into the holes left behind and will sprout promptly following a couple weeks of daily irrigation. Follow these steps when broadcasting grass seed.

bulletApply a seed-starter fertilizer, according to directions, over the prepared lawn area.  grass seed spreader

bulletApply the grass seed at the rate of at least 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet of area when overseeding.  Most people prefer using a tall fescue blend in sunny piedmont yards, and seed mixtures when shade is an issue.

bulletKeep renovated areas moist with light sprinklings of water twice daily.  As the seed germinates, reduce the frequency of watering

bulletMow the renovated lawn at a height of 2.5 to 3.5 inches.

bulletYou should apply a turf-grade fertilizer again in February to have a nice spring lawn.

Around the Arboretumlogo
The turfgrass areas in the Arboretum were plugged and overseeded last month courtesy of  Nature’s Select Premium Turf Services.  We have been fortunate to have good industry partners assisting us with both plants and services. Local garden clubs have been generous to the Arboretum as well. This summer Dogwood Garden Club donated the funds to purchase a new, custom-built steel arbor for the Herb Garden. We hope to have it erected in time for the annual Friends Gala.
We always welcome resident garden-lovers to be a part of the Arboretum at Tanglewood--- our county’s premier botanical garden--- by joining the Friends program. Learn by visiting our website  www.TanglewoodGardens.org

Gardening TIP
The seeding rate for a new lawn is 6 pounds of grass seed per one thousand square feet of yard. Applying too much seed is costly and can create an environment for fungus diseases in irrigated lawns. Use no more than two bales of straw mulch over the same area.
