Plant
of the Month March 2008
Golden Threadleaf False Cypress
Early bulbs are blooming. The flowering apricots, maples and witchhazels have branches covered with pink, red and yellow petals. The Winter Daphne is covered with fragrant blooms. Dormant plants are starting to stir and the early flowering is in full swing.
However, deciduous trees and shrubs are still leafless, so the evergreens are very visible in the garden. This is a good time to walk through the conifer garden in the arboretum. You will see that conifers come in many colors, shapes, sizes, and textures. Some are tall and slim. Some are short and broad. Some are blue. Some are yellow.
One of the best yellow conifers is Golden Threadleaf False Cypress ‘Yadkin Gold’.
This shrub was selected by Rob Means of Yadkin Valley Nursery (Conifer Ridge). It holds its yellow color all year on weeping threadlike branches. It is a true dwarf, growing to 3 feet tall by 4 ½ feet wide. It is a beautiful specimen plant and makes a strong statement in the landscape.
Rob Means donated the conifer garden at the arboretum to honor his father. The plants are young so you can watch them as they mature. It’s a beautiful addition to the arboretum and we hope you will visit often.
